Is Indiana University on quarters or semesters? ›

Indiana University--Bloomington has a total undergraduate enrollment of 35,660 (fall 2022), with a gender distribution of 50% male students and 50% female students. At this school, 34% of the students live in college-owned, -operated or -affiliated housing and 66% of students live off campus.

A semester system generally consists of two 15-week terms, while a quarter system consists of four 10-week sessions. A quarter system consists of four 10-week sessions in the fall, winter, spring, and summer. The average full-time student takes 3-4 courses per term, or 9-12 credits.

The word “semester” comes from the Latin word “semestris,” which means “of six months.” Later, it was adopted in academic calendars to indicate a half-year or approximately a six-month division of the academic year.

Each quarter you attend the UW. There are three quarters in the academic year (autumn, winter, and spring), plus summer quarter if you wish to attend then as well. Courses you register for last only one quarter (normally 10 weeks plus finals).

All Purdue Global academic calendars are year-round and employ the quarter system, except for Purdue Global Law School which uses the semester system. Calendars A, B, and C are based on a 10-week term and a 30-week academic year.

The difference between semester and quarter hours

And the semester system assigns 1 credit hour for a course that meets for about 2.5 hours per week. So students experience approximately 37.5 hours of instruction per course. While the quarter system splits the academic year into three-quarters of 10 to 11 weeks.

The academic calendar is composed of two semesters. Fall semester starts in late August (with first-year students arriving a week early for placement tests and adjustment to campus life) and ends in mid-December after final exams. Spring semester starts at the end of January and finishes in mid-May after final exams.
